1516 1558 Coronation Crowds Head Dress Kilian Tudor

EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary Tudor, also known as Mary I or Mary I of England, is depicted in this stunning print from the Mary Evans Picture Library, proudly wearing her regal attire during her coronation as Queen of England in 1553. The historical image, captured by the renowned artist Kilian, captures the essence of Mary's reign as the first English queen to reign in her own right, following the death of her brother, Edward VI. Mary's coronation took place on October 19, 1553, at Westminster Abbey, where she was crowned with the traditional St. Edward's Crown. The scene in the print shows Mary, dressed in her elaborate and ornate robes, wearing a magnificent headdress adorned with precious stones and pearls, as she is presented with the orb and scepter by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The crowd in the background, filled with onlookers and dignitaries, bears witness to the momentous occasion. Mary's reign was marked by her strong commitment to the Catholic faith, which she had embraced during her exile in Spain. She sought to reverse the Protestant Reformation that had taken place during her brother's reign and restore Catholicism as the official religion of England. Her efforts, however, were met with resistance and led to a period of religious turmoil and persecution, known as the Marian Persecutions. Despite the challenges she faced, Mary's reign marked a significant turning point in English history, paving the way for the eventual establishment of the Church of England under her successor, Elizabeth I. This print serves as a reminder of Mary's important role in English history and the complexities of her reign as a Catholic queen in a predominantly Protestant country.
