1516 1558 Courtiers Guarding Kelly Tudor

EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary Tudor, also known as Mary I or Mary I of England, is depicted in this striking historical print as the Catholic Queen of England, surrounded by her loyal courtiers who vigilantly guard her. Born on February 18, 1516, in Greenwich Palace, Mary was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. After her mother's death in 1536, Mary was declared illegitimate, and her half-sister, Anne Boleyn, became queen. However, Anne's reign was short-lived, and Mary was restored to the succession after Anne's downfall and execution in 1536. Mary's reign, which began in 1553, was marked by her staunch Catholicism and her determination to restore the Catholic faith in England. She married Philip of Spain, the future Holy Roman Emperor, in 1554, and together they sought to impose Catholicism on England. Mary's reign was also marked by religious persecution, with hundreds of Protestants being burned at the stake for heresy. This print, produced in the late 19th or early 20th century, captures the regal and determined image of Mary Tudor as she sits on her throne, surrounded by her courtiers who are sworn to protect her. Their stern expressions and military attire convey a sense of duty and loyalty, reflecting the political and religious tensions of the time. Mary Tudor's reign lasted only five years, from 1553 to 1558, but it left a lasting impact on English history. Her efforts to restore Catholicism in England were ultimately unsuccessful, and her reign was followed by that of her Protestant half-sister, Elizabeth I. Nevertheless, Mary Tudor remains an intriguing and complex figure in English history, and this print offers a fascinating glimpse into her reign and the political and religious landscape of 16th-century England.
