The image, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, dates back to the year 1558, just before her death. Born in 1516, Mary was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. After her mother's death, Mary was married to King Philip II of Spain, but the union was not a happy one. Following her husband's death in 1554, Mary ascended to the English throne, becoming the first queen regnant in England. Mary's reign was marked by her efforts to restore Catholicism to England after the Protestant Reformation under her brother, Edward VI. Her actions led to widespread persecution of Protestants, earning her the nickname "Bloody Mary."
