1516 1558 Rogers Tudor Vertue

EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary Tudor, also known as Mary I or Mary I of England, is depicted in this striking portrait painting from the late 16th century. Born on February 18, 1516, Mary was the only surviving child of King Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. After her mother's death in 1536, Mary was declared illegitimate by her father and was eventually sent to live in the household of her paternal uncle, the Duke of Suffolk. Mary's fortunes changed when her older half-sister, Elizabeth I, failed to produce an heir, making Mary the next in line for the throne. In 1553, Mary was proclaimed queen following her brother Edward VI's death. Mary's reign was marked by her strong commitment to restoring Catholicism in England, which had been suppressed during her father's and brother's reigns. This portrait, believed to be painted by an unknown artist, shows Mary Tudor wearing the traditional Tudor attire of the time, with a richly embroidered gown and a jeweled collar. Mary's expression is serious and regal, reflecting her determination to rule with authority and restore Catholicism to England. Mary's reign was not without challenges, however. Protests against the restoration of Catholicism led to riots and rebellions, and Mary's marriage to Philip of Spain, the king of Spain, further fueled opposition. Mary's efforts to secure a male heir were also unsuccessful, and she died on November 17, 1558, just before her 42nd birthday. Despite the controversies of her reign, Mary Tudor is remembered as a significant figure in English history. Her commitment to restoring Catholicism laid the groundwork for the eventual return of the faith to England, and her reign marked the end of the Tudor dynasty. This portrait serves as a reminder of Mary's strength, determination, and legacy as the Catholic Queen of England.
