EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures Mary Tudor, also known as Mary I or Mary I of England, in the regal splendor of her role as Queen of England. The image, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, dates back to the year 1558, just before her death. Mary is depicted in a sumptuous chair, dressed in rich brocade, adorned with a collar and intricate headpiece, both bedecked with precious jewels. Born in 1516, Mary was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. After her mother's death, Mary was married to King Philip II of Spain, but the union was not a happy one. Following her husband's death in 1554, Mary ascended to the English throne, becoming the first queen regnant in England. Mary's reign was marked by her efforts to restore Catholicism to England after the Protestant Reformation under her brother, Edward VI. Her actions led to widespread persecution of Protestants, earning her the nickname "Bloody Mary." However, this portrait, taken towards the end of her reign, shows a more serene and regal Mary, dressed in the finery befitting a queen. The intricate details of Mary's clothing and accessories are a testament to the opulence of the Tudor court. The collar and headpiece are adorned with pearls, rubies, and other precious stones, while the brocade fabric is richly embroidered with gold and silver threads. The chair, too, is a work of art, with intricate carvings and ornate decorations. This portrait offers a glimpse into the grandeur of the Tudor court and the power and majesty of Mary Tudor, a monarch whose reign was marked by both triumph and tragedy.
