Mary, born in 1581, was the wife of John Erskine, the 2nd (or 7th) Earl of Mar and Lord Treasurer of Scotland. The couple's marriage was significant, as Mary was the granddaughter of King James VI of Scotland and Anne of Denmark, making her a member of the Scottish royal family. The portrait, painted in 1665, captures Mary's beauty and sophistication. She wears an intricately patterned dress, adorned with lace and embroidery, and a matching mantle draped over her shoulders.
