EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, Mary Stewart, Countess of Mar, is depicted in elegant attire, her regal presence radiating an air of refinement and grace. Mary, born in 1581, was the wife of John Erskine, the 2nd (or 7th) Earl of Mar and Lord Treasurer of Scotland. The couple's marriage was significant, as Mary was the granddaughter of King James VI of Scotland and Anne of Denmark, making her a member of the Scottish royal family. The portrait, painted in 1665, captures Mary's beauty and sophistication. She wears an intricately patterned dress, adorned with lace and embroidery, and a matching mantle draped over her shoulders. Her hair is styled in elaborate curls, framing her face and accentuating her delicate features. John Erskine, who served as Lord Treasurer of Scotland from 1661 until his death in 1675, was a powerful and influential figure in Scottish politics. Mary, as his wife and a member of the royal family, would have played an important role in court life and diplomacy. Despite her privileged position, Mary's life was not without tragedy. She was widowed twice, first in 1623 when her first husband, James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose, was executed for treason, and again in 1675 when her second husband, John Erskine, passed away. Mary's legacy extends beyond her personal life, as she is remembered as a patron of the arts and a supporter of the arts. She was known to have a large collection of books and was a patron of the poet Robert Henryson. This portrait serves as a testament to her beauty, status, and the cultural significance of the time in which she lived.
