"Mary Robinson, also known as the Maid of Buttermere, is depicted in this poignant 19th century photograph. Mary was the daughter of the landlord of the Fish Inn in the picturesque village of Buttermere, located in the English Lake District. Her life took a tragic turn when she was seduced by a notorious con man named Hatfield. Hatfield, who went by various aliases, was known for his deceitful ways and eventually led Mary into a life of crime. In 1802, Mary and Hatfield were caught forging checks, and they were both brought to trial. Despite her youth and innocence, Mary was sentenced to hang for her involvement in the crime. The tragic tale of Mary Robinson captured the imagination of the poet William Wordsworth, who wrote about her in his poem "Michael," published in 1805. The poem immortalized Mary as a symbol of the vulnerability and innocence of the rural working class, who were often exploited by the unscrupulous and deceitful.
