EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary I of England, also known as Mary Tudor, was born on February 18, 1516, in Greenwich Palace, London, to King Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Mary was the eldest surviving child of the monarch and his first wife, making her the half-sister of Edward VI and Elizabeth I. Mary's reign as Queen of England began in 1553, following the death of her younger brother, Edward VI. Mary's accession to the throne was not without controversy, as her claim to the throne was disputed by her cousin, Lady Jane Grey, who had been crowned queen for just nine days before Mary's forces captured her and asserted her rightful place on the throne. Mary's reign is often referred to as the "Bloody Mary" period due to her zealous persecution of Protestants in England. Mary was a devout Catholic and sought to restore the Catholic faith in England, which had been suppressed during her father's and brother's reigns. Thousands of Protestants were executed during her reign for refusing to convert back to Catholicism. Despite her controversial reign, Mary is also remembered for her patronage of the arts and learning. She brought scholars back to England and established the first public English library. Mary's court was also known for its grandeur and extravagance, with lavish feasts and elaborate entertainments. Mary I died on November 17, 1558, after a reign of just over three years. She was succeeded by her half-sister, Elizabeth I, who went on to become one of England's most celebrated monarchs. This image of Mary I, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the regal and determined expression of a queen who ruled during a tumultuous time in English history.
