YMCA Hut - High Street Kensington, London
YMCA Hut - High Street Kensington, London. Almost every available square foot of greenery in central London was comandeered for war purposes, often in some of the most prestigious locations. In Sloane Square, the Bibesco Hut provided meals for many of the men stationed at the nearby barracks in Chelsea; a hut for American officers, in London, named the Washington Inn, was quickly erected in the leafy YMCA Washington Inn shade of St. Jamess Square and in exclusive Grosvenor Square, the Victoria Rifles, a Territorial regiment, took up residence. EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the chaos and upheaval of World War I, every available inch of green space in central London was repurposed for war efforts. In High Street Kensington, the YMCA Hut stood as a beacon of comfort and respite for soldiers stationed at nearby barracks. This photograph, taken in 1915, captures the opening ceremony of the YMCA Hut in Kensington. The YMCA, an international organization dedicated to providing aid and support to soldiers and their families, quickly responded to the needs of the war effort by constructing huts in various locations throughout London. The High Street Kensington YMCA Hut, also known as the Washington Inn, was one such facility. With the Bibesco Hut in nearby Sloane Square providing meals for soldiers, and the American officers' hut already established in St. James's Square, the addition of the Washington Inn in High Street Kensington was a welcome addition to the military community. The hut offered a range of amenities, including a canteen, reading room, and recreational spaces, providing soldiers with a much-needed break from the rigors of military life. The opening ceremony of the Washington Inn was a significant event, attended by local dignitaries and military officials. The photograph shows a group of soldiers gathered outside the hut, dressed in their uniforms, as they prepare to enter and enjoy the facilities. The YMCA Hut in High Street Kensington was just one of many such facilities that the YMCA established during the war, providing essential support to soldiers on the home front.
