EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the moment of respite for two weary British soldiers, Sgt R Raitley and Pte G B Ball, amidst the chaotic aftermath of the Battle of Elst during Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, 1944. The town of Elst, located south of Arnhem, was the site of intense fighting between the British 30 Corps and German forces as the former attempted to reach the beleaguered 1st Airborne Division. The heavy rains during the battle caused widespread flooding, making the terrain treacherous and difficult to navigate. Despite their efforts, 30 Corps were unable to reach the airborne troops, leaving them to endure a prolonged siege. In this image, Sgt Raitley and Pte Ball take a brief moment to rest among the floodwaters, their expressions reflecting a mixture of exhaustion and determination. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the harsh realities of war and the resilience of the soldiers who fought in it. Taken by an official war photographer in 1944 or 1945, this image is one of 49 official photographs from World War Two in the Mary Evans Prints Online collection.
