EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determined gaze of Jean Marie Dominique Navarre (1895-1919), a French pilot and fighter ace, as he stands before his Morane-Saulnier Type L aircraft towards the end of 1915 during the First World War. Navarre, dressed in his military uniform adorned with medals, was a sergeant pilot serving with Escadrille MS 12, one of the most renowned French fighter squadrons of the war. The Morane-Saulnier Type L, a single-seat biplane fighter, was a formidable machine of the era, its propeller spinning menacingly in the background. Navarre's service during the war was marked by exceptional bravery and skill in the skies. He was a prolific fighter ace, having shot down multiple enemy planes and earning the respect of his comrades and adversaries alike. However, the shadows of war did not end with the signing of the Armistice. Tragically, Navarre lost his life on 10 July 1919 while practicing for a postwar victory event. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who took to the skies during the First World War, and the enduring legacy of the aviation pioneers who shaped the history of flight.
