Alien Clearing Crowds Demonstration Demonstrations Demonstrators Enemy Exchange Internment

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures two separate demonstrations that took place in London during 1915, both in support of German enemy alien internment. The image on the left shows a large crowd gathered at Tower Hill, waving Union Jack flags and carrying banners that read "Aliens Out" and "Protect Our Homes." The demonstrators, many of whom were women, were calling for the internment of German and Austro-Hungarian civilians living in the UK, amidst growing fears of espionage and sabotage on the home front. The atmosphere was tense, with reports of violent clashes between pro- and anti-internment groups. The photograph on the right shows another demonstration taking place at The Royal Exchange. Here, a smaller but equally passionate crowd gathers, this time in opposition to enemy alien internment. Holding banners that read "No Internment" and "Fair Play for the Aliens," these demonstrators argued that the internment of civilians without evidence of wrongdoing was a violation of their civil liberties. The debate over enemy alien internment was a contentious issue during World War I, with many feeling strongly on both sides. Ultimately, the government decided to intern over 30,000 enemy aliens, the majority of whom were German or Austro-Hungarian. These demonstrations serve as a poignant reminder of the complex and often divisive social and political climate of the time.
