EDITORS COMMENTS
October 31, 1900: The Futile Efforts of Bryan, Schurz, and Stevenson to Fan the Flames of Imperialism This illustration from Puck magazine, published on October 31, 1900, depicts a scene of three prominent political figures attempting to fan the flames of imperialism, represented by a small campfire, to no avail. William Jennings Bryan, holding a large bellows labeled "Bryanism," leads the group, with Carl Schurz on his left and Adlai Stevenson kneeling on the ground on the right. At the turn of the 20th century, the United States was experiencing a surge in imperialistic ambitions, with the Spanish-American War having recently ended and the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, and other territories coming under American control. The three men in this illustration were prominent figures in the Democratic Party and were known for their opposition to imperialism. Despite their combined efforts, as symbolized by their blowing on the fire, imperialism continued to gain momentum. The illustration serves as a commentary on the futility of their efforts and the power of the imperialistic movement at the time. The caption in Puck magazine accompanying this image read, "It won't take," emphasizing the sense of inevitability surrounding the spread of American imperialism.
