EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the rolling hills of Norfolk, England, during World War I, a group of determined women worked tirelessly on the tobacco farm at Methwold. In this series of photographs taken in 1915, we witness the women's crucial role in the tobacco cultivation process. In the first image, the women are seen tying and looping tobacco to be placed on stays. Their unencumbered limbs, alluded to by the breeches they wear, allow them to work efficiently and effectively. In the second photograph, the women collect the tobacco to be taken to the barn. Their dedication and hard work are evident as they fill baskets with the ripe crop. The advantages of their breeches become even more apparent in the third image, as they mount carts to transport the tobacco. The freedom of movement afforded by these garments enables them to maneuver easily and load the carts efficiently. In the fourth photograph, the women bring the stays to gather the tobacco, continuing their essential work on the farm. The final image captures the spirit of the women's labor as a young girl enjoys a cigarette after dinner. Despite the challenges of wartime, the farm at Methwold continued to produce tobacco, grown and smoked in this historic Norfolk town. These photographs offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the women who played a vital role in the agriculture industry during World War I, contributing to the war effort from the home front.
