EDITORS COMMENTS

This evocative image captures the final moments of William Tyndale's life, as he stands resolute before the flames of the stake. Tyndale (1494-1536), an English scholar and theologian, is best known for his role in the early English Reformation as the first to print the New Testament in the English language. His work on translating the entire Bible into English, a project he began in 1525, was a direct challenge to the Church's monopoly on scripture and its Latin-only liturgy. Tyndale's translations were considered heretical by the Catholic authorities, who saw them as a threat to their power and control. In 1535, Tyndale was arrested in Antwerp, Belgium, and brought before the Inquisition. He was charged with heresy and treason, and despite numerous attempts to recant, he refused to renounce his beliefs. The inscription at the bottom of the print reads, "Here was William Tyndale, an Englishman, burned to ashes, October the 6, 1536, by the order of the Emperor Charles the Fifth, and King Henry the Eighth, for translating the New Testament into the English tongue, and for teaching and publishing the same." Tyndale's execution was a significant turning point in English religious history, and his legacy as a pioneering Bible translator continues to be celebrated to this day. The image shows Tyndale dressed in a ruff, a high collar typical of the period, and he gazes steadily into the distance, his expression one of quiet determination. The Latin inscription on the stake above him reads, "Vox clamantis in deserto," which translates to "A voice crying out in the wilderness." This biblical reference underscores Tyndale's role as a prophetic figure in the English Reformation, and his unwavering commitment to making the word of God accessible to the English people.
