EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "General Sir William Thomas Knollys: A Prominent Figure in 19th Century British Military History (Black Rod, 1877)" This evocative photograph captures the distinguished visage and military bearing of General Sir William Thomas Knollys (1797-1883), a British Army officer who rose to prominence during the mid-19th century. Knollys is depicted here in his role as Black Rod, an officer of the Household of the British monarch, responsible for summoning Members of Parliament to the House of Lords. The image was taken in 1877, a testament to Knollys' long and illustrious career. Born in London, Knollys entered the British Army in 1812 at the age of 15, serving in the Peninsular War and the Crimean War. He gained recognition for his leadership in the Battle of Alma, where he commanded the 1st Brigade of the Light Division. Knollys' military prowess continued to be demonstrated throughout his career, earning him numerous promotions and accolades. In 1856, he was appointed as a General and was later made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in 1861. In 1865, he was appointed as the Master-General of the Ordnance, a position he held until his retirement from the military in 1872. After his retirement, Knollys was appointed as Black Rod, a role he held until his death in 1883. In this capacity, he was responsible for maintaining order in the House of Lords and for carrying the Warrant for the arrest of Members of the House of Commons when they were in contempt. This photograph, taken in 1877, captures Knollys in the later years of his career, still exuding the military presence and authority that had served him so well throughout his life. The image is a poignant reminder of a bygone era in British history and the remarkable career of a man who played a significant role in shaping it.
