EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, published in Paris, France, in 1816, showcases two distinct species of wild goats native to the Mediterranean island of Corsica: the European Wild Goat, Capra aegagrus, and the Mouflon, Ovis aries orientalis. The illustration, painted by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraved by Carnonkel under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, provides a detailed and accurate representation of these magnificent creatures. The European Wild Goat, also known as the Alpine Ibex, is depicted on the left side of the image. This goat species, with its distinctive curved horns, is native to the Alps and other mountain ranges in Europe. In the image, the wild goat is shown in a naturalistic setting, with its coat adorned with the typical greyish-brown fur and black markings. On the right side of the engraving, the Mouflon, or Corsican Wild Sheep, is depicted. This species, characterized by its curved, twisted horns, is endemic to Corsica and Sardinia. The mouflon's coat is shown in the engraving as a reddish-brown color, with a lighter underbelly. The intricacy and detail of this historical illustration are a testament to the skill and artistry of the artists and engravers involved in its creation. Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming an artist to the Museum of Natural History, brought his expertise to the creation of this work. The engraving was published by F.G. Levrault, further adding to its historical significance. This stunning image not only showcases the natural beauty of these wild goat species but also serves as a reminder of the rich natural history of Corsica and the European continent.
