EDITORS COMMENTS
On the 20th of November, 1947, Princess Elizabeth of Edinburgh (later to become Queen Elizabeth II) and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, embarked on their new journey as husband and wife following their fairytale wedding at Westminster Abbey. The newlyweds, both beaming with joy, waved and smiled from the opulent golden state carriage during their grand procession through the streets of London. The bride, dressed in a stunning white satin gown with a 14-foot long silk tulle veil and the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara, looked radiant as she sat next to her groom, who wore the uniform of the Royal Navy, adorned with orders and decorations. The coach was drawn by six white horses, with liveried footmen in attendance. The procession, which took place on a crisp autumn day, was a spectacle of British royalty and tradition. The streets were lined with thousands of well-wishers, who had braved the chilly weather to catch a glimpse of the newlywed couple. The carriage was illuminated by gas lamps, adding to the magical atmosphere of the occasion. Princess Elizabeth's elder sister, Princess Elizabeth, the Duchess of Edinburgh (later to become the Queen Mother), and her mother, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, also accompanied the couple in the procession. The wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip marked the beginning of a new era in British monarchy and was a symbol of hope and joy during the post-war period. This photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Prints Online / Photo Union Collection, captures the essence of the joyous occasion and the excitement of the British people as they welcomed their new royal couple.
