EDITORS COMMENTS
In this ancient Greek votive stele, dating back to around 360 BC, a lively procession makes its way towards the temples of Dionysus and Artemis in Attica, Greece. The relief depicts a group of men and women, dressed in robes and carrying various offerings, including a flute and masks, as they make their way to the temples to pay homage to the gods. Dionysus, the god of wine, fertility, and theater, is depicted at the center of the procession, surrounded by his followers, who are dressed in the traditional Bacchic costume of ivy leaves and animal skins. The god is shown wearing a wreath of ivy and carrying a thyrsus, a staff topped with a pine cone and ivy. To the left of Dionysus, Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, wilderness, and childbirth, is shown in her temple, receiving offerings from the procession. She is depicted wearing a hunting outfit and carrying a bow and quiver. The scene on the stele commemorates a victory in a theatrical contest dedicated to these two gods. The men and women in the procession are likely the winners of the contest, celebrating their triumph with a sacrificial offering to Dionysus and Artemis. This beautiful and intricately carved votive stele is now on display at the Glyptothek in Munich, Germany, offering a glimpse into the rich history and cultural traditions of ancient Greece. The procession, with its lively energy and sense of community, continues to captivate viewers and transport them back to a time of mythology, music, and celebration.
