EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, taken in the late 19th century, we see Viscountess Jocelyn, née Frances Elizabeth Cowper, also known as Fanny Jocelyn. Born on March 13, 1834, in London, England, Fanny was the eldest daughter of the 6th Earl Cowper and Lady Elizabeth Sackville-West. She married Thomas Jocelyn, 12th Earl of Roden, on May 14, 1856, and became Viscountess Jocelyn upon her husband's elevation to the peerage in 1861. The elegant Viscountess is depicted here in a formal portrait, wearing a high-necked, long-sleeved gown with a fitted bodice and a voluminous skirt. Her hair is styled in an intricate updo, adorned with a pearl and diamond headpiece. Her expression is serene and poised, reflecting the refined sensibility of the Victorian era. Fanny Jocelyn was known for her beauty, intelligence, and charitable work. She was a patron of various charities, including the Royal Hospital for Incurables in Chelsea, and was also an accomplished artist and writer. Her literary works included poetry and articles for magazines, and she was a regular contributor to the "Lady's Newspaper." The photograph captures a moment in time, preserving the memory of a remarkable woman who left her mark on history as Viscountess Jocelyn. Her legacy continues to inspire and intrigue, offering a glimpse into the lives of the aristocracy during the Victorian era.
