EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, published between 1816 and 1830 in Paris, France, showcases two intriguing birds: the Violaceous Crow (Corvus violaceus) and the Magpie Tanager (Cissopis leveriana). The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Violaceous Crow, also known as the Purple Crow or the Glossy-black Crow, is a large bird native to Central and South America. The male is characterized by its glossy black plumage, while the female has a duller, more brownish appearance. The crow's beak is black, and its eyes are a bright, piercing yellow. The Magpie Tanager, on the other hand, is a medium-sized bird found in South America. The male is strikingly colorful, with a black body, a blue head, and a vibrant red belly. The female, however, is more subdued, with a brownish-gray body and a black mask around her eyes. The intricate details of these birds are beautifully captured in this engraving, which was directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and engraved by Guyard. The use of the stipple technique, which involves the application of small dots of ink to create texture and shading, adds to the depth and richness of the image. This stunning artwork is a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the time, and a reminder of the beauty and diversity of the natural world.
