EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this photograph of The Village, Prittlewell, in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England, dating back to 1906. This quaint image offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the charming rural character of this historic village that once stood in stark contrast to the bustling coastal town it is now a part of. The Village, also known as Prittlewell Old Town, was a separate parish and rural community located just north of Southend-on-Sea. Its peaceful streets, lined with thatched-roof cottages and quaint houses, were a world away from the hustle and bustle of the growing town. In this photograph, we see a horse-drawn cart making its way along a narrow, cobblestone street, surrounded by lush greenery and beautiful gardens. The Village was known for its rich history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Iron Age. The discovery of a Saxon burial site, known as Prittlewell Princely Burial, in 2003, further cemented its historical significance. The Village Church, St. Mary's, can be seen in the background of the photograph, a reminder of the strong religious ties that bound the community together. As the years passed, The Village was gradually absorbed into Southend-on-Sea, and many of its buildings were demolished to make way for new developments. Today, only a few remnants of its past remain, making this photograph an invaluable record of a bygone era. This photograph is not only a testament to the history of The Village but also a reminder of the importance of preserving our past for future generations. As we admire the beauty and charm of this image, we are transported back to a simpler time, a time when life moved at a slower pace, and community spirit was at the heart of everyday life.
