EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored steel engraving, created by Annedouche after a drawing by Edouard Travies, showcases the striking contrast between a Vicuna and a Llama. The image is taken from the "Richard's New Edition of the Complete Works of Comte de Buffon," published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1837. Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), a renowned French naturalist, wrote extensively about zoology and natural history. His comprehensive works, which included detailed observations and illustrations of various animal species, were considered groundbreaking in their time. The Vicuna, depicted on the left, is the smallest camelid species native to South America. With a thick, woolly coat and long, slender legs, it is well adapted to the harsh conditions of the Andes Mountains. Vicunas are known for their fine, luxurious wool, which is highly prized and can only be shorn every three years. On the right, the Llama, a larger camelid species, is shown with its distinctive long ears and hump on its back. Llamas were domesticated by the Incas for their wool, meat, and use as pack animals. They are social animals that live in herds and are often used as guard animals for smaller livestock. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the physical differences between these two species but also captures the essence of their unique roles in South American wildlife and history. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the image to life, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical zoological illustrations.
