EDITORS COMMENTS
Step right up and prepare to be enchanted by the captivating image of Veronique, as depicted in this elegant promotional postcard from the early 1900s. The beautiful actress is shown gracefully swinging in a bower of swings, surrounded by the soft glow of stage lights. This image was adapted by Henry Hamilton from the French original by Albert Van Loo and Georges Duval, created for the Theatre des Bouffes Parisiens in Paris on the 10th of December 1898. The music for this enchanting production was composed by Andre Messager, and the piece was first produced at the Apollo Theatre in 1904. As part of the George Dances Co. tour, Veronique made her way to the Theatre Royal in Colchester on the 23rd of November 1905. The image on this postcard captures the sweet allure and popular appeal of the theatrical pantomime, a beloved form of entertainment that swept the stage during this era. The swinging sweethearts and swinging bowsers were a common sight in theatres across the land, and Veronique's grace and poise perfectly encapsulate the spirit of this beloved theatrical tradition. This postcard, featuring the artwork of KIN, is a stunning reminder of the magic and wonder of the past. It invites us to imagine the enchantment and excitement of a live performance, transporting us back to a time when the theatre was a place of dreams and delight.
