The Gallipoli campaign, also known as the Dardanelles Campaign, was an attempt by the Allied forces, consisting mainly of British and French troops, to secure a sea route to Russia through the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus. The invasion of the Gallipoli peninsula was initiated with an amphibious landing at five beaches, with V Beach at Cape Helles being one of the main landing sites.
