1830s 1834 Bell Bells Clapper Moscow Ringers Ringing Rung Tsar

EDITORS COMMENTS
Tsar Kolokol," or the "King of Bells," is a historic bell located in Moscow, Russia, renowned for its massive size and grandeur. This photograph, taken in 1834, captures a significant moment in the bell's history as a team of strong men carefully rings it. The Tsar Bell, also known as Kolokol or Kolokoi, was cast between 1733 and 1735 during the reign of Tsar Ivan VI, but was never installed due to its size and the instability of the bell tower. It remained in the foundry until 1737 when it was damaged during an explosion. The bell was eventually repaired and recast in 1739, but it was not until 1835 that it was finally installed in the Ivan the Great Bell Tower. This photograph, taken just one year prior to the installation, shows the bell being rung by a team of men using a long clapper. The bell, which weighs an impressive 202 tons, required a great deal of strength and coordination to ring. The men are shown wearing traditional Russian clothing, adding to the historical significance of the image. The Tsar Bell is a symbol of Russian history and engineering prowess, and its impressive size and intricate design have made it a popular tourist attraction in Moscow. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, capturing a moment in time when the Tsar Bell was still a work in progress, and the sound of its ringing could only be imagined.
