Agamemnon Ajax Besiegers Charging Cloth Co Xbd29 Vy Coëtivy Conrard Eighth Heroes Including Master Struggle Trojan Trojans Vulcop Telamon

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite tapestry, created around 1470, depicts a pivotal moment in the Trojan War, specifically the scene of Achilles' Death. The left scene of the eighth cloth in the series, this masterpiece is attributed to the Master of the Coëtivy, Henry or Conrard of Vulcop, who was active in Tournai between 1454 and 1479. The intricate weaving of wool and silk, with approximately 6/7 threads per cm, measures an impressive 482 x 942 cm. The vibrant image portrays the Trojans in a valiant charge against the besieging Greeks. In the midst of the fray, prominent figures such as Agamemnon and Ajax Telamon engage in a fierce struggle. Agamemnon, the Greek leader, is shown attempting to seize the fallen Patroclus' armor, which had been mistakenly believed to be Achilles. Ajax, meanwhile, is seen wrestling with a Trojan warrior. This tapestry is a testament to the artistic prowess of the Flemish art tradition during the late Middle Ages. It is currently housed in the Cathedral Museum of Zamora, Spain, and offers a captivating glimpse into the epic tales of ancient Greek mythology.
