This historic photograph captures the grand opening ceremony of the Blackwall Tunnel in London, England on May 22, 1897. The Blackwall Tunnel, a marvel of engineering at the time, was the first road tunnel under the River Thames, connecting the boroughs of Lewisham and Tower Hamlets. The opening ceremony was an extravagant affair, attended by thousands of people and graced by the presence of the Royal Family. In this image, the Royal procession, led by the Duke of York, can be seen making its way out of the newly-opened tunnel. The Duke, dressed in full military regalia, is seated in an open carriage, surrounded by his entourage. The carriage is followed by a cavalcade of horses and carriages, carrying dignitaries, officials, and other distinguished guests. The crowd that has gathered on the other side of the tunnel, eager to witness the historic moment, can be seen in the background, waving and cheering. The Blackwall Tunnel was a significant milestone in the history of transportation in London.
