The Tophane Cesmesi Fountain - one of the most famous of the baroque street fountains in the city. Built in 1732 by Mahmut I. Has marble walls, covered by floral designs and arabesques. Carved in low relief - these reliefs were originally painted and gilded. The widely overhanging roof was missing for a while, but is now restored. Postcard by Publishing House of Rochat. Inspired to issue a series of cards of quite well-known views of Constantinople which they then washed out in various colours. EDITORS COMMENTS
"The Tophane Cesmesi Fountain, a grand baroque street fountain located in the historic city of Constantinople, Turkey, is depicted in this photograph. Built in 1732 during the reign of Mahmut I, the fountain boasts intricately carved marble walls adorned with floral designs and Arabesque patterns. Originally, these reliefs were painted and gilded, adding to their ornate beauty. The widely overhanging roof, which had been missing for some time, has now been restored, completing the fountain's majestic appearance. The Tophane Cesmesi Fountain was a vital source of water supply for the city's residents, who would gather around it to carry home the fresh water. The fountain's intricate design and historical significance made it one of the most famous landmarks in Constantinople. This photograph is a postcard published by the Rochat Publishing House, inspired by the desire to create a series of cards featuring well-known views of Constantinople. The postcard's creators washed out the image in various colors, an innovation for Constantinople at the time. The result was a series of popular cards that captured the essence of the city's rich history and architectural beauty." This caption provides a historical and descriptive context for the photograph of the Tophane Cesmesi Fountain, highlighting its significance as a vital water source and a symbol of the city's baroque architectural heritage. It also mentions the innovative publishing technique used by the Rochat Publishing House to create the postcard series.
