In this photograph, a SEPECAT Jaguar GR.1 of the Royal Air Force (RAF) from No. 54 Squadron is seen taxying at RAF Coltishall in the late 1980s or early 1990s. The Jaguar GR.1, a twin-engine, multi-role combat aircraft, was a joint venture between the French and British governments and first entered service with the RAF in 1977. The image showcases the distinctive angular design of the Jaguar, with its variable sweep wings, which could adjust from a swept-back position during high-speed flight to a straight configuration at low speeds for optimal lift. This innovative feature allowed the Jaguar to excel in both ground-attack and interception roles. No. 54 Squadron, based at RAF Coltishall, was one of the RAF's premier Jaguar units. The squadron was formed in 1916 and had a rich history, having operated various aircraft types, including the legendary Avro Shackleton and the English Electric Canberra. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the squadron was equipped with the Jaguar GR.1, which it used for various missions, including reconnaissance, close air support, and air defense. The Jaguar GR.1 was a versatile and capable aircraft, and its service with the RAF spanned over two decades.
