De Motu Animalium,

EDITORS COMMENTS
published in 1685, is a seminal work in the history of anatomy and physiology, authored by the Neapolitan professor of mathematics, Giovanni Alfonso Borelli. This engraved title page, created by the printers Cornelis Boutesteyn, Daniel van Gsbeeck, and Pieter van der Aa, provides a glimpse into the groundbreaking discoveries contained within the book's pages. The image depicts various animals, including horses and lions, in dynamic poses, suggesting the theme of motility that is explored in the text. The supernatural beings often associated with animal movement, such as wings and tails, have been replaced by the intricate workings of muscles and mechanics. Borelli's innovative approach to understanding animal movement challenged the prevailing Aristotelian beliefs of his time, which held that animals moved through the action of their souls rather than through physical means. Instead, Borelli conducted extensive observations and experiments on living animals, using the newly developed technique of dissection to examine their anatomy. The title page reflects the interdisciplinary nature of Borelli's work, which drew on the fields of anatomy, mechanics, and physics to provide a comprehensive explanation of animal motility. The Latin title, "De Motu Animalium," translates to "On the Motion of Animals," and the subtitle, "Expounded According to the New Anatomical Discoveries," underscores the revolutionary nature of Borelli's research. This title page serves as a testament to the intellectual curiosity and scientific rigor of the seventeenth century, as well as the pivotal role that Borelli played in the development of modern biology. The intricate engraving not only showcases the artistic skills of the printers but also provides a visual representation of Borelli's groundbreaking ideas, which continue to influence our understanding of animal movement and physiology today.
