This handcolored copperplate engraving depicts the Timber Rattlesnake, Crotalus horridus, a venomous serpent native to the eastern and central United States. The Timber Rattlesnake is also known as the Northern Copperhead or the Canebrake Rattlesnake, and is the largest rattlesnake species in the eastern part of the country. The snake is shown in great detail, with its distinctive rattle at the end of its tail, and its triangular head adorned with distinctive, pit-like organs called fossae, which are used to detect infrared radiation emitted by warm-blooded prey.
