EDITORS COMMENTS
Thos Dyke Acland (Elder): A Young Statesman and Philanthropist of the 19th Century This portrait captures Thos Dyke Acland (1787-1871) in his youth, showcasing the charisma and intelligence that would later make him a prominent figure in British politics and philanthropy. Born into the prominent Acland family of Devon, England, Thos Dyke Acland was educated at Oxford University and entered Parliament in 1812 as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tiverton. He quickly established himself as a respected and influential figure, serving in various government roles throughout his political career. However, Acland was not content with merely pursuing political power. He was deeply committed to improving the lives of his fellow citizens, particularly those in his native Devon. He established the Tiverton Workhouse, which provided relief to the poor and needy, and was a vocal advocate for the repeal of the Corn Laws, which he believed were harming the working class. Acland's philanthropic efforts extended beyond his local community. He was a leading figure in the campaign to abolish slavery, and he used his influence to secure the passage of the Emancipation Act in 1833. He also supported various educational and religious initiatives, including the establishment of the National Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor in England and Wales. Despite his many accomplishments, Acland remained humble and dedicated to serving his community. This portrait, taken in 1787, offers a glimpse into the early life of a man who would go on to make a significant impact on British history as a statesman and philanthropist.
