1790 1872 Bishop Churchman Ecclesiastical Historian Short

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Reverend Thomas Vowler Short (1790-1872): A Prominent Churchman, Bishop, and Ecclesiastical Historian Thomas Vowler Short (1790-1872) was a distinguished figure in the Anglican Church and a renowned ecclesiastical historian of his time. This evocative portrait captures the intellectual and spiritual depth of this remarkable man, whose contributions to the Church and the study of its history left a lasting impact. Born on March 21, 1790, in London, England, Short was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in 1813. He was ordained a deacon in 1815 and a priest in 1816, beginning his clerical career in the Church of England. Short's dedication to the Church led him to rise through the ranks, eventually becoming the Bishop of Calcutta in 1837. He served in this position until 1859, during which time he played a crucial role in the Anglican mission in India. Short's passion for ecclesiastical history is evident in his extensive body of work. He authored numerous books and articles on various aspects of Church history, including "A History of the English Church from the Accession of Queen Elizabeth to the Death of Queen Anne" and "The History of the Church of England from the Reformation to the Present Time." These works provided valuable insights into the development of the Anglican Church and its role in English society. Upon his retirement from the Bishopric of Calcutta, Short returned to England and continued his scholarly pursuits. He passed away on March 13, 1872, leaving behind a rich legacy as a dedicated churchman, a compassionate bishop, and a respected ecclesiastical historian. This photograph, taken during his later years, serves as a poignant reminder of the remarkable life and achievements of Thomas Vowler Short.
