?The Storming of Schinss, Jan 3rd 1810?

?The Storming of Schinss, Jan 3rd 1810?.Coloured aquatint by I Clark after R Temple, 65th (2nd Yorkshire, North Riding) Regiment of Foot published by W Haines, 1813.In 1809 the Bombay Presidency organized an expedition the Persian Gulf to suppress piracy. The fortress of the Schinss [sic] surrendered after a heavy, night long bombardment.Between 1793 and 1815 Britain was almost constantly at war with France. The ships, sailors and soldiers needed to safeguard trade were in short supply, so the activities of pirates grew. For example, Arabian pirates often attacked merchant shipping in the Persian Gulf. This led the Bombay Presidency to launch an attack on the pirate settlements there in late 1809. As well as Presidency troops, the 47th and 65th Regiments of Foot played an important role. Two more joint Army-Navy campaigns against Gulf pirates followed in 1819 and 1821. Date: 1810

The Storming of Schinass, Jan 3rd 1810

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating coloured aquatint print depicting a pivotal moment in the history of the Bombay Presidency. The image, created by I. Clark after R. Temple and published by W. Haines in 1813, vividly portrays the assault on the pirate fortress of Schinass on the night of January 3, 1810. During this period, from 1793 to 1815, Britain was engulfed in almost continuous wars with France. With ships, sailors, and soldiers in short supply due to these conflicts, piracy flourished, particularly in the Persian Gulf where Arabian pirates frequently attacked merchant shipping. In response, the Bombay Presidency launched an expedition to quell piracy in late 1809. The 47th and 65th Regiments of Foot, including the 2nd Yorkshire, North Riding Regiment, played crucial roles in these campaigns. The fortress of Schinass, located in the Persian Gulf, eventually surrendered following a heavy, night-long bombardment. This print commemorates that decisive moment in the battle, with British soldiers storming the fortress under the cover of darkness. The vivid colours and intricate details of the print bring the scene to life, offering a glimpse into the intense and dangerous world of colonial warfare during this era. This historical artwork serves as a testament to the determination and courage of the British forces in protecting their interests and safeguarding trade in the face of piracy and conflict.
