1956 Aristotle Churchill Covers Magnate Shipping Spencer Tatler Tina Athina Onassis

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking cover image features Tina Onassis, born Athina Mary Livanos, in a portrait taken for Tatler magazine in 1956. Tina was the second daughter of the renowned Greek shipping magnate Stavros Livanos and Arietta Zafirakis. She first made headlines when she married the wealthy and influential Aristotle Onassis in 1952, becoming his first wife and the mother of their daughter, Christina. However, their marriage ended in 1962, and in 1966, Tina married her older sister Eugenia's widower, Stavros Niarchos. Tina's life was not without tragedy. In 1956, she suffered severe injuries in a motor accident at St. Moritz. The photograph on the cover captures her in the midst of her recovery, her resilience and strength evident in her gaze. Tina's life continued to be marked by highs and lows, including a controversial relationship with her husband's business partner, Costas Gavras, and her untimely death by drug overdose in Paris in 1974, while living with her third husband. Tina Onassis' story is a fascinating chapter in the history of the Greek shipping industry and the lives of the wealthy and influential. This portrait, taken during a pivotal moment in her life, offers a glimpse into her strength and determination in the face of adversity.
