EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this coloured lantern slide depicting the breathtaking Handeck Falls on the Aare River in Switzerland. Dating back to the late 1890s, this image transports us to the heart of the Swiss Alps, specifically to Bern, where the Aare River, after carving its way through the Aare Gorge, is joined by the Aerlenbach creek. The combined stream then plunges from a height of 150 feet into a cauldron, creating the magnificent Handeck Falls. Located about 9 miles south of Meiringen village, this natural wonder is a sight to behold. The waterfall's power is harnessed by the nearby Handegg I hydroelectric station, which can be seen at the foot of the falls. The vibrant colours of this lantern slide offer a unique perspective into the history of Switzerland during the late 19th century. This image, which is part of Box 181 entitled 'Swiss No.1', invites us to imagine the awe and wonder felt by early travellers as they encountered this breathtaking scene. The Handeck Falls remain a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a chance to connect with nature and appreciate the raw power and beauty of the natural world. This coloured lantern slide is a testament to the enduring allure of Switzerland's stunning landscapes and serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage that continues to captivate us today.
