EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases two fascinating amphibian species native to South America: the Surinam Toad (Pipa pipa) and the Surinam Horned Frog (Ceratophrys cornuta). The Surinam Toad, depicted in the image with a male and a female, is characterized by its unique flattened body shape and long, slender legs. The female is shown carrying a clutch of eggs on her back, a common reproductive behavior in this species. The Surinam Toad is native to the tropical rainforests of South America, and its diet consists mainly of insects and other small invertebrates. The Surinam Horned Frog, illustrated in the engraving as number three, is easily recognizable by its distinctive horns and large, powerful jaws. This frog is also known as the Pac-Man Frog due to its ability to swallow prey much larger than itself. The Surinam Horned Frog is a carnivorous species and preys on a variety of insects, rodents, and even small reptiles. This historical illustration not only showcases the natural beauty of these amphibians but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of the 18th century. The intricate details of the engraving, coupled with the vibrant handcoloring, make this a stunning addition to any collection of natural history or children's literature.
