EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving, created by Wilson Lowry for Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature, published in London in 1816, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of surgical practices during the 19th century. The image showcases an array of surgical equipment that was commonly used during this time, including tourniquets and amputation instruments. The tourniquet, depicted at the bottom left of the engraving, was a crucial tool for controlling bleeding during surgical procedures. The design featured in this engraving consists of a cuff made of fabric or leather, which could be tightened around a limb using a screw mechanism. This would apply pressure to the limb, restricting blood flow and allowing the surgeon to perform the operation with minimal blood loss. The amputation instruments, displayed prominently in the center of the image, were essential for performing surgical amputations. These instruments included a tourniquet, a saw, a knife, and forceps. The saw was used to carefully and precisely cut through the bone, while the knife and forceps were employed for incising the skin and removing the severed limb. The surgeon would then use the forceps to apply pressure to the stump to help stop the bleeding. This engraving serves as a poignant reminder of the advancements in medical technology during the 19th century and the significant role that surgical equipment played in saving lives. Despite the rudimentary nature of these tools compared to modern surgical equipment, they represented a crucial step forward in the field of medicine and contributed to the evolution of surgical practices.
