EDITORS COMMENTS
Annie Kenney, a prominent Suffragette leader, is seen here welcoming two recently released prisoners, Ellen Pitman and Mary Allen, at a reception in the Queens Hotel in Bristol in March 1909. The two women had served one-month sentences in Holloway Prison following their arrests during a deputation to the Home Secretary on February 24, 1909. The deputation aimed to demand the release of fellow Suffragettes who were imprisoned for peaceful protests. The released prisoners, Mary Allen and Ellen Pitman, were greeted with a procession and warm reception from members of the Women's Social and Political Union (W.S.P.U). Mary Allen, born in 1878, later moved to Hastings and then Edinburgh, continuing her work as a W.S.P.U organizer. During World War I, she joined the Women Police Volunteers. This poignant moment in the fight for women's suffrage marks the determination and resilience of the Suffragettes, who were willing to endure imprisonment to secure their rights.
