The illustration, created by Mordecai Cubitt Cooke in 1862, is taken from his comprehensive work, "A Plain and Easy Account of British Fungi," published in London. Cooke, an English botanist and mycologist, dedicated his career to the study of fungi, working at the India Museum and the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew. The St. George's Mushroom, Agaricus gambosus 1, is easily identified by its large, white, umbrella-shaped cap, which can grow up to 15 centimeters in diameter. Its stem is short and bulbous at the base, with a white, downy ring. This mushroom is a popular edible species, often found in woodlands and grasslands throughout Europe. The Common Mushroom, Agaricus campestris 2, is another common and widespread mushroom species, often found in grasslands and meadows. Its cap is also white and umbrella-shaped but is smaller than that of the St. George's Mushroom, typically growing up to 10 centimeters in diameter. The Common Mushroom's stem is longer and slenderer than that of the St. George's Mushroom, with no visible ring.
