EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: St. Anne's Home, Herne Bay, Kent - A Haven for Care and Healing This evocative photograph, estimated to date back to around 1900, captures the St. Anne's Home in Herne Bay, Kent, during its tenure as a convalescent home for pauper children from the South Metropolitan School District. The former Pier Hotel, situated at the centre of the image, had been repurposed for this noble cause in 1876. Before its transformation into St. Anne's Home, the Pier Hotel had been a popular lodging place for weary travellers and tourists visiting the picturesque seaside town of Herne Bay. However, with the increasing need for a dedicated facility to care for the less fortunate children in the South Metropolitan District, the building was acquired and converted. In 1897, the responsibility for managing St. Anne's Home was transferred to the Metropolitan Asylums Board, which marked a new chapter in the history of the institution. During this period, it continued to serve as a convalescent home, providing a sanctuary for children in need of respite and care. By 1919, St. Anne's Home had undergone another significant change. It was converted into a Tuberculosis (TB) Sanatorium, reflecting the growing awareness and concern for the prevention and treatment of this debilitating disease. The building's transformation into a TB Sanatorium further solidified its role as a beacon of hope and healing for those in need. This photograph, with its rich history and poignant significance, offers a glimpse into the past and the important role that institutions like St. Anne's Home played in caring for the most vulnerable members of society.
