This photograph captures the essence of the Hindu Juggernaut Procession in Colombo, Sri Lanka during the 1910s. The term 'juggernaut' is derived from the Sanskrit word Jagannatha, meaning 'Lord of the universe,' which is one of the many names of Krishna from ancient Vedic scriptures of India. The famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, Orissa, is home to the Ratha Yatra, an annual chariot procession, where the murtis (statues) of Jagannath, Subhadra, and Balabhadra are carried in elaborately decorated chariots pulled by horses. In this image, we see a similar procession taking place in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The chariot, adorned with intricate designs and vibrant colors, is being pulled by devotees, surrounded by a mob of onlookers. The horses, decorated with flowers and other ornaments, seem to be in a trance, as if guided by a divine force. The devotees, with their faces filled with devotion and joy, are mobbing the chariot, reaching out to touch the murtis as they pass by. The coast of Colombo provides a serene backdrop to this historical event, with the crowd and the chariot seemingly merging with the beach and the surrounding greenery. The Juggernaut Procession is a testament to the rich history and cultural diversity of Sri Lanka, showcasing the deep-rooted religious traditions and the unwavering faith of its people. This photograph is a beautiful reminder of the power and significance of religious ceremonies and the profound impact they have on communities around the world.
