EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the iconic Sphinx, a rocky feature that dominates the Anzac landing beaches on the west coast of the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. Known to the troops as The Sphinx and to the Turks as Yuksek Tepe, or High Hill, this natural landmark holds significant historical importance as the site of the World War I landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) on April 25, 1915. The ANZAC landing was a pivotal moment in the Gallipoli Campaign and is commemorated each year on Anzac Day, a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand. The rugged terrain of the beach and cove is dotted with boulders and rocks, adding to the challenging conditions faced by the soldiers during the landing. This photograph, taken circa 1918, provides a glimpse into the past and serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of the ANZAC troops during the Great War.
