Erected in the early 1900s, this monument is a testament to the rich cultural connections between Spain and Portugal. The monument is centered around a 40-meter-tall Corinthian column, topped with a 7.2-meter-tall bronze statue. The statue, sculpted by Rafael Atchuén, depicts Christopher Columbus in a iconic pose, with his right hand pointing towards the New World and a scroll in his left. However, there is a popular belief that the statue actually points east towards Columbus' supposed hometown of Genoa, Italy. Four magnificent lions grace the corners of the monument, adding to its grandeur and majesty. The intricate details of the monument, from the intricately carved column to the lifelike figure of Columbus, make it a must-see attraction for visitors to Barcelona.
