This lithograph depicts a proud and determined group of Carlist cavalrymen, known as the Cavalry of the Cid, during the Carlist Wars in Spain. The Carlist Wars, also referred to as the First and Second Carlism, were a series of conflicts that took place in the late 19th century between the supporters of Carlos VII, a claimant to the Spanish throne, and the forces of the Spanish government. The Cavalry of the Cid, named after the legendary Castilian hero El Cid Campeador, was one of the most famous and effective military units of the Carlists. These brave men, dressed in traditional Spanish armor and wielding lances and shields, are shown here charging forward with unwavering resolve. Their stern expressions and focused gaze convey their unyielding commitment to their cause. This evocative image is taken from the "Album de tropas carlistas de Aragón" (Album of Carlist Troops from Aragon), a collection of lithographs that documented the various military units of the Carlists during the Carlist Wars.
