The Pragmatic Sanction, issued in 1830, had abolished the Salic Law, which prohibited the succession of women to the Spanish throne. This decision was made in response to the birth of a female heir, Isabel II, to Fernando VII and his wife, Maria Cristina. However, the king's conservative supporters, known as the Carlists, opposed this change and saw it as a threat to traditional Spanish values. In October 1832, Fernando VII, under pressure from the Carlists, issued the Decree of 6th October, which revoked the Pragmatic Sanction and put the Salic Law back into effect.
