EDITORS COMMENTS
This souvenir postcard commemorates the historic 8-month Royal Indian Tour of 1905-1906, undertaken by His Royal Highness George, Prince of Wales, and his wife, Her Royal Highness Princess Victoria Mary of Teck (later known as Queen Mary). The tour began in October 1905 and marked the Prince's first official visit to India as the heir apparent to the British throne. The postcard features a stunning portrait of the royal couple, with the Prince in military uniform and the Princess in an elegant gown adorned with the Order of the Star of India and the Order of the Indian Empire. The Union Jack flag and Indian heraldry are prominently displayed, symbolizing the British monarchy's connection to the Indian subcontinent. The tour was significant for several reasons. It strengthened the bond between the British monarchy and the Indian people, and the Prince and Princess were warmly welcomed throughout their journey. They visited various cities, including Bombay (Mumbai), Delhi, Agra, and Calcutta (Kolkata), and participated in numerous ceremonies and events. The tour also marked the beginning of a new era in the relationship between Britain and India, as the Indian National Congress was holding its annual session during the Prince's visit. The Congress, which advocated for Indian self-rule, presented the Prince with a memorandum demanding greater representation in the British government. Although the Prince did not make any concrete promises, the tour marked a turning point in the Indian independence movement. This souvenir postcard is a testament to the historical significance of the Royal Indian Tour of 1905-1906 and the enduring connection between the British monarchy and India.
