EDITORS COMMENTS
Sophie Dorothea of Prussia (1687-1757), also known as Sophie Charlotte, was the beloved queen consort of Frederick III, Elector of Brandenburg and later King in Prussia, and the mother of the renowned monarch Frederick II, also known as Frederick the Great. This portrait of Sophie Dorothea, painted in the late Baroque period, showcases her regal beauty and elegance. Born as a Duchess of Hanover, she married Frederick III in 1706, and their union was celebrated throughout Europe. The marriage, however, was marked by tragedy and scandal, as Sophie Dorothea was accused of having an affair with a courtier, leading to her imprisonment in the Castle of Köpenick. Despite these challenges, she remained a devoted mother to her children, including Frederick the Great, who would go on to become one of the most influential rulers in European history. This image, a testament to the resilience and grace of Sophie Dorothea, captures her as a queen and mother in the golden age of the Hohenzollern dynasty in Prussia.
