EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite print is a captivating representation of a snake from Albertus Seba's Thesaurus, a renowned natural history collection published between 1731 and 1740. The intricately detailed illustration, plate 54, showcases the sinuous form of a snake from the Squamata order, specifically the Serpentes family, which includes over 3,000 known species. Albertus Seba, a Dutch apothecary, amassed an extensive collection of naturalia and naturalia rariora, or rare natural objects, during the 17th and 18th centuries. His collection, which was later published as Thesaurus, was a groundbreaking work that documented a vast array of plants, animals, and minerals. The snake in this print is depicted in a mesmerizing spiral, its body twisted and curled in a way that accentuates its slithering motion. The intricate engraving, with its delicate lines and precise shading, brings the snake to life, capturing its agility and grace. The watercolor adds depth and dimension, making the scales appear almost tactile. The snake's taxonomic classification is indicated in the print's title, which identifies it as a diapsid, a sauropsid, and an ophidian. Diapsids are a large group of reptiles characterized by two openings in the skull, while sauropsids are a subgroup of diapsids that includes reptiles and birds. Ophidians, or snakes, are a suborder of squamates, a group of reptiles characterized by their scaly skin. This beautiful print is a testament to the meticulous work of Albertus Seba and his team, who dedicated themselves to documenting the natural world in all its complexity and beauty. It remains an enduring reminder of the fascination and wonder that natural history continues to inspire in us today.
